Work on the high windows, the outer wall and the roofs
There have already been many years of hard work on the restoration of the Pieterskerk. The part of the church that lies above gutter height will be finished in 2007. A large part of the slate and lead work on the roof will be replaced. Part of the slate can be recycled, but large parts need to be replaced with new material. The high windows have been restored; the natural stone has been repaired or replaced and all windows have new leaded windows. The windows have also been fitted with special front windows. These will protect the leaded windows and help keep the wind and water out of the building.
The work done on the high windows was on the outside as well as on the inside, which is why a work floor
was constructed resting on the window sills of the high windows in 2003. This ‘floating' floor, 17 meters high, ensured that the church could stay open and in use as much as possible during the restoration. The work on the high windows was all finished in the summer of 2007 and the high floor was removed, making the original ceiling and the new windows completely visible again.
From the South-East the church can be admired in all its restored splendour without the scaffolding.
What needs to be done?
A start will be made restoring the lower parts of the church in 2008:
- The natural stone on all the low windows will be repaired or replaced; all leaded windows will be renewed and fitted with front windows.
- Cracks have been found in nearly all pillars and posts in the head. This is the direct result of rusting cramps.
- The tombstone floor is currently resting on a worn mortar floor; this damages the wonderful monumental tombstones. All tombstones need to be removed to prevent this.
- The portals and the measuring and regulating devices need to be updated according to the latest health and safety regulations.
- Worn and outdated provisions for serial inspection, lighting, heating and use can be replaced and updated according to the current regulations, for instance labour laws.
The planning of the work is not yet definite, but if the needed funds will be available in time it is to be expected that the extended work can be finished in the summer of 2009.
